Labor-Aid
This recipe is recommended for women in labor to help balance electrolytes – it’s the better version of Gatorade for pregnant women:
- 1 Quart of Water
- 1/3 Cup of Honey
- 1/3 Cup of Real Lemon Juice
- 1/2 teaspoon of salt
- 1/4 teaspoon of baking soda
- 2 crushed calcium tablets
Serve cold or freeze into small ice cubes.
Essential Oils
First, it is important to note that many essential oils are safe and helpful during pregnancy and childbirth. Some are useful alternatives to drugs. Yet there are several that can be harmful, causing menstrual bleeding, contractions of the uterus and/or possible miscarriage. However, during labor some exceptions are made since we want to invite uterine activity at this time. Please be sure to check with your midwife, health care provider or doctor before using any herbs or essential oils during pregnancy or labor. Never ingest essential oils.
We suggest that you do not use them directly on the skin by themselves, especially before exposure to direct sunlight as they can cause skin pigmentation. Simply add a drop or two to a diffuser filled with water, place nearby, breathe deeply and enjoy. You may also add a couple drops to a 10ml bottle of a carrier oil of your choosing (apricot kernal, grapeseed oil, almond oil, coconut oil, jojoba oil, etc.) for a soothing addition to massage techniques.
Geranium, Rosemary, Lavender, and Chamomile have pain relieving and relaxant effects.
Citrus Oils (Orange, Tangerine, Grapefruit, Lemon, & Bergamot) are all calming & uplifting + they help to ease an unsettled stomach.
Clary Sage improves efficency towards the end of labor and is a muscle relaxant (as in the muscles surrounding the uterus)
Roman Chamomile promote uterine activity and invite a regular, productive contraction pattern.
Peppermint & Eucalyptus wake you up and keep you going when you need more energy.
Geranium supports circulation and breathing, and boasts antidepressant effects.
Neroli is a very good anti-depressant, but it also helps with anxiety, fear and apprehension.
Rose is considered a very feminine oil and is used as a uterine tonic which supports labor.
Jasmine is uplifting and calming.
Ylang Ylang is a strong scent - be certain that you find it pleasing ahead of time. If you do enjoy this scent, it is a good choice for helping to lower blood pressure. It can be soothing and relaxing.
